The Canadian Peace Research and Education Association was founded by a group of peace researchers meeting at a conference at the University of Sherbrooke in 1966. Ever since that time the association has been meeting regularly at its annual conference (besides some regional gatherings) held along with the meetings of other Learned Societies.
Membership is open to scholars, teachers researchers, and students in the various disciplines related to the study of war and peace, as well as to social activist, peace-building organizations.
